I’m having a terrible time trying to understand all of the email documentation.
I haven’t had my lunch yet either, and have been undergoing a fresh install of RT/RTIR for the past few hours. LOL .
Anyhow,
Could someone please point me in the right direction towards what I need from RT/RTIR.

  1. I’m going to be using RTIR, not RT. (I don’t think it matters) Between me&my boss who run the SOC to track incidents
  2. I just need email to go outbound from an internal server hosting RT THROUGH a mail gateway that we have EX ##MAILGATEWAY.COMPANYNAME.LOCAL### , right now RTIR is crashing when needing to do specific things/clicking around learning the platform , probably because it’s trying to send email out to our email addresses linked to our accounts.
  3. I wouldn’t mind having a centralized mailbox where we can recieve tickets too… JUST ONE EMAIL ADDRESS…

Someone help, I’m headed to lunch - but I’ll be receiving all replies to this ticket via email.

right now RTIR is crashing when needing to do specific things/clicking around learning the platform , probably because it’s trying to send email out to our email addresses linked to our accounts.

Clicking around the UI wouldn’t cause RT to send email, so if RT is crashing just from viewing the UI and not making any changes then that sounds like a different issue. What do the RT logs say when you run into one of these errors?

Could you explain what your current set-up is? Are you hosting your own mail server using something like exchange or Postfix?

No not from just clicking around, I would have to respond to a ticket and CC someone.
I think it’s anything that requires an email being sent would cause the system to haul.
Clicking around is fine and all db functions seem normal.
Without setting up email, it says in the documentation that the system will not operate 100%.

I’m at an enterprise where they have their own exchange-mail server, essentially I can send mail out of a mail relay here, and I have the IP address of the server running RT white listed so if I was able to point out to that server it would send out of my environment with some sort of noreply@ ,.

You should be able to use Postfix to relay your mail to the external exchange server, I believe this is quite common. Searching online real quick I see this tutorial that should be a good start:

Say I get this all up and running so I can send mail out, where in RT specific would I configure this?

RT uses the Linux sendmail utility to send mail, I am not an expert on all of this but I believe installing and configuring Postfix to relay emails being sent from “user@yourcompanydomain” to your external SMTP server will make RT just “work”

You probably want to set up your mail server software (postfix, exim, sendmail or whatever) first and check that its working by hand, before trying to get it working with a new RT install. Especially if you’re new to RT - you want to be working on stable foundations! If you can send/receive mail using the command line mail client on the server (‘mail’ or ‘mailx’ or ‘alpine’ for example) you’ll know that the mail side is working and then its just a case of getting RT to talk to the mail system on your machine.

I have success.
I needed to add the subnet of the mail server, as well as a few other destination points for the relay.
I was lucky enough to find that a coworker in the IT department spent a week on configuring PostFix to work for a kali machine running vuln/scans.
