Is tagging available in RT6?

Hello,
Is tagging available in RT6 either natively or through the Tags extension? The extension appears to be incompatible with v6 and all the information I can find predates v6 substantially, so I thought I would ask here. Custom Fields are too restrictive as it appears each acceptable value must be pre-configured, so Tags sound like what I need.
Any pointers would be most welcome
