ExtendedStatus in colour

I have setup the search pages to display the status and extended status
in colour with the code from
http://wiki.bestpractical.com/view/ShowStatusInColor

Is there any way to dynamically pull the ExtendedStatus into the code?
At the moment the sub extStatusInColor code rewrites what exists, but it
would be a lot more useful to display the default text while maintaining
the colours.

As there is no $Ticket->ExtendedStatus I am at a loss on how to achieve
this.
