Bizarre copy of ARRAY in aassign

Has anybody seen this (subject) error message (yes, with two a’s) before?

Last time I saw that, I had tried to use a @ prototype in an older version
of Perl. (and no, “aassign” isn’t a typo; it’s a routine that does Array
ASSIGNment.)

What is the code that is raising this error?
