A new home for the wiki

Hi folks,

In the very near future we’re planning to move the RT wiki from our own
simple wiki software to Wikia. Moving to Wikia should help tremendously
with the spam we’re seeing. I’ve run a test conversion at
http://rttest.wikia.com, and it generally looks good to us. If you use
the wiki, please take a look at the test conversion and let us know of
any oddities you come across so we can address them beforehand.

Best,
Thomas

not sure that I’m going to still contribute to this wiki :frowning:

I suspect that you meant to link to /Licensing. I’ll note
the license of the content on Wikia is CC-BY-SA, which does
somewhat limit “bad” things that anyone can do with what we write
and aligns fairly nicely with RT’s licensing.

It’s Best Practical’s intent to pay wikia the small amount of
money they ask for to turn off ads on the wiki.

Best,
Jesse

Hi,

Skip some pages on import using name match, for example “car shipping”.

Don’t import empty pages:
http://rttest.wikia.com/index.php?title=Special:ShortPages&limit=500&offset=0

I spotted a few pages that loose content during move. It’s not
importer issue, but pages on the current wiki are emptied by incident.
Is there way to import history as well?On Thu, Nov 4, 2010 at 8:01 PM, Thomas Sibley trs@bestpractical.com wrote:

no I really meant about Privacy Policy. If you open an account on wikia
with required fields such as our name, email and gender, this
information will be associated with your wikia moves for commercial
purpose.

after a first read I thought that we need to login to contribute, but I
just see that it is not needed to login:

“You are not required to register for an account or to provide any
personal information to us in order to use the Service.”

Skip some pages on import using name match, for example “car shipping”.

These spam pages are deleted from wiki.bestpractical.com already, but
the test import source I used was a few days old. Cleaning up the wiki
content prior to import is planned.

Ah, good catch. I’ll modify the importer.

We could theoretically import the history (the exporter supports
exporting it), but there’s so much spam back and forth that it seems not
worth it. We’ll definitely keep the history around in the form of the
wifty database in case we need it.

Search doesn’t seem to work at all. Is that normal?

May be it needs some time for indexing.

I searched for stuff I know should be in there, and nothing came up.

Best regards, Ruslan.

If all goes as planned, we’ll be doing the final move to Wikia later
this week. Links to wiki.bestpractical.com will redirect to the
appropriate page at the new location, and we’ll put up a read-only
archive of the old wiki somewhere.

Has the new wiki come on-line yet? I have some updates to post, but I wasn’t sure if it’s worth it until the new one is up.

It hasn’t because higher priority things got busy, but it’s still high
on my radar. Please do post the updates in the meantime. Before I
start the migration the old wiki will become read-only and then
archived. Any content that makes it in before the flip to read-only
will make it over to Wikia.

Also, there’s a wiki user “prosch” that keeps posting spam on the HomePage page - links to german adverts. I can see this has been going on for a while (Bill Cole has deleted a lot of them) and I’m wondering if there’s a script doing it. Is it possible to disable this user?

Yes, I’ve seen this. It will be mitigated once we move to Wikia. For
now I’ve disabled the user. I should say that we’re very grateful for
the few users like Bill Cole who aggressively monitor spam better than
we can.

Hello,

The new home of the wiki is now http://requesttracker.wikia.com/wiki/HomePage

The full text search function is poor, I even would call it broken.
E.g. if you search “auth” you get nothing back.

Can someone fix this please ?

Thanks
jo

Yeah, I completely agree. The search is horrible. I noticed, you don’t
seem to get any results unless you select something from the drop down
list as you type your search. For instance, if you search object, you
get no results, but as you type the word object, it shows you
‘objectmodels’. If you search for objectmodels, you’ll get the page for
that.

I REALLY miss the old wiki. Why did we switch? Was it a matter of the
funding for hosting the wiki? If so, I’m sure someone would donate the
hosting for the wiki. Heck, I’m sure I could even talk my boss into
hosting the wiki.

A large part of the reason for the switch was anti-spam. Running the
project wiki on its own was a constant battle against the spammers.
Wikia is much better able to leverage their scale to stop the spammers.

I agree that we need to address the search issue. It really does look
like something is wrong, not just poorly done.

I contacted Wikia staff and they filed a ticket with the techs to look
into the issue.
