This is what I have been doing, and it worked in 3.6.1. Since I upgraded
to 3.6.3, the ()? causes no regexp matching to be done (it lets strings
pass ‘(/d)?’.) I can get mandatory fields to work, just not optional
fields with enforced formatting.
