is there any easy way to find out what tickets were modified, resolved,
whatever between certain dates?

In the web ui, I just Searched for

“Created” “after” “1/1/2001”, clicked 'refine",
“Created” “before” 9/1/2001" and clicked “Show results/Search”

and it did just what you wanted.
